Garda Fitness Test

Stage 3 Fitness Test / Physical Competency Test

All Garda applicants undergo a standardized Physical Competency Test (PCT) as a crucial phase of the Garda recruitment application process and subsequent training.

Applicants must pass both components of the test within a strict total time limit—there is absolutely no deviation from this format. Passing this stage cannot be taken for granted, even if you consider yourself fit and healthy. Because the test is now continuous and non-stop, it requires an exceptional level of cardiovascular endurance, agility, and mental focus.

Historically, physical testing has proven a major hurdle for applicants; official figures showed that up to 1 in 3 recruits failed previous iterations of the entry test. The modernized format remains highly demanding and is designed to ensure all prospective trainees possess the exact physical capabilities required for frontline duty.

Please note: A Medical Examination, Substance Misuse Testing, and Garda Vetting are also carried out during this stage.

Components of the Fitness Test

The Garda PCT is a two-part, continuous challenge that must be completed back-to-back with no break in between.

To pass, all candidates—regardless of age or gender—must complete both the Shuttle Run and the Obstacle Course within a combined maximum time of 8 minutes and 4 seconds.

Part 1: Shuttle Run (Beep / Bleep Test)

This assessment involves running continuously between two lines spaced 20 metres apart. Candidates must keep pace with an audio track featuring intervals that gradually decrease in time, forcing you to increase your speed.

  • The Standard: All candidates must successfully reach Level 5.6.
  • Duration: This portion takes exactly 4 minutes and 54 seconds, covering a total distance of 760 metres.
  • Format: Universal baseline standard (no separate age or gender scoring).

On successfully hitting the last beep at Level 5.6, candidates must immediately proceed directly to the obstacle course with no rest period.

 Part 2: Timed Obstacle Course

Candidates are required to complete two full circuits of a role-specific obstacle course immediately after the shuttle run. The obstacle course portion must be completed in under 3 minutes and 10 seconds (keeping the total test duration within the 8 minutes and 4 seconds limit).

The course mimics real-life, high-pressure situations encountered in operational policing, testing your speed, balance, strength, and quick thinking.

The circuit comprises the following elements in order:

  1. Sprint Start
  2. Weave through cones at speed
  3. Walk along a narrow balance beam
  4. Lift and carry a car wheel for 3 metres
  5. Crawl under a low barrier
  6. Jump over a 1-metre-wide mat
  7. Push a heavily weighted sled for 6 metres
  8. Pull a heavily weighted sled for 6 metres
  9. Run up and down a flight of stairs
  10. Climb over a standard gate barrier
  11. Final 16-metre sprint to complete the lap

Important to Note: If a candidate fails to correctly execute any individual component of the obstacle course (e.g., stepping off the balance beam or knocking over a cone), they must repeat that specific component immediately while the recorded countdown clock continues to run.
